OMICRON II - LOW COST TREND MONITORING & ALARM
The Omicron II, the low cost dust monitor for stack emissions monitoring when environmental and safety risks are not high
The Omicron II is a real time, continuous indicative dust monitor with logging and alarm capabilities. It consists of a single probe for installation in the silo or duct, and a control unit/logger.
When to Choose Omicron
The Omicron II dust monitor is used for both process control (bag house filter failure or process leakage alarm), and regulatory compliance. Using tribo-electric technology, it provides ETR-Unidata´s lowest cost dust monitoring solution, and is generally found on plants where:
- environmental and safety risks are not high enough, and
- operating efficiencies not worth enough
to justify the investment in higher cost quantitative and certified dust monitors. In the U.K., they provide a solution to dust monitoring requirements at Part A(2) and Part B industrial installations which fall under the U.K.´s Local Authority Pollution Prevention and Control (LAPPC) regulations.
Tribo-electric dust monitors such as the Omicron II are most suitable for use in low humidity gas streams with reasonably constant flow rates.

Alarm Monitoring in Baghouses
The Omicron II has a large LCD display which gives an instantaneous read-out of the emissions in the form of a bar graph and a digital read-out showing the trailing average reading.
The green (normal operations)-yellow (warning)-red (alarm) “traffic light” display in the control unit/logger provides an easily visible alert for the operator, even if he is not closely monitoring the unit. The green light is set to operate at levels where the process is running cleanly and efficiently, the red at the maximum permitted level for emissions, and the yellow when emissions reach 75% of the level at which the red alarm is triggered, to allow early reaction (which can of course help avoid non-compliance with emissions limits or catastrophic failure).
The alarm time lapse feature serves to prevent alarm events from planned short-term peak emissions (for example caused by filter cleaning cycles or on process start-up). The lapse period is determined by the user, and can be set at up to 10 minutes.
The Omicron IIAR´s separate audible/visual alarm serves to remove the risk that the visual traffic light alarm on the control unit/logger could be missed for a period (for example, as a result of operator remoteness from the installation).
Control Unit/Logger
The control unit is mains powered, and incorporates a bar graph/alphanumeric and a traffic light display.
The logger will record up to 30,000 events. This will allow, for example, recording up to a maximum of 6 months of data with 10 minute averaging.
On installation, the following (variable) inputs are set:
- The dust levels at which the red traffic light alarm is triggered,
- The alarm time lapse period, and
- The emissions level at which the audible and visual alarm is triggered (Omicron IIAR)
